Great design is elusive and creativity can be subjective. However, there is universal agreement on the power that design and creativity have in contributing to a product’s success. The challenge is that the path to design greatness is shrouded in mystery. There is no map to follow to get there. In this Q and A, we speak with Dustin Senos, Former Head of Design at Medium where we gain insight into the creative process.
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?
I’m incredibly thankful that I found something I loved at an early age. Design and engineering are passions of mine and I wake up thankful everyday that I have been able to turn them into my career.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I find conversations with an individual or a group of people incredibly inspiring. When I’m in a visual design slump, I show my work to my peers and seek feedback.
Describe your design process?
I try to validate an idea as quickly as possible. But, because all ideas are different, and there are so many ways to validate an idea, my process is always evolving. There are aspects of IDEO’s design thinking and Google’s design sprints I often use.
How do you handle designers block?
I get outside and go for a walk. It helps clear my head.
Who are some designers that you admire? Why?
I admire Enrique Allen and Soleio’s perspectives on our industry. Geoff Teehan, Haraldur Thorleifsson, Leigh Taylor, Dann Petty, and the whole crew at Medium are some of my favorite designers I’ve had the chance to collaborate with.
What advice would you give to younger designers getting started now?
Work hard, and take nothing for granted. We’re not only lucky to design for a living, but we have a responsibility to help improve how people live through design. Remember that, and do great work.
